Getting to Know Chris
Musical Timeline

We all have times we feel lost and can’t see the path before us. Chris Chickering is a singer-songwriter/producer whose music shines a light on that path, through messages of hope, healing, and empowerment. Since 2012 he has recorded six studio albums (Artist Site, iTunes, Spotify): “Shine” (2012), “Living in the Now” (2013), “The Resurrection of Me” (2014), “The Better Side” (2015), “Regeneration” (2015), and “The Hero’s Journey” (2017).

Fueled by a desire to empower himself and others, Chris has always found music to be a refuge for guidance and inspiration, especially during his most challenging times. Growing up in San Francisco, Chris was influenced by artists like Cat Stevens, Neil Young, Train and The Rolling Stones, and moved by the humanitarian efforts of singer-songwriter Harry Chapin, to create his own unique message-driven music. You can read Chris’ heartfelt PERSONAL STATEMENT HERE.

Great music starts with great songs. In the fall of 2012 Chris Chickering and three-time Emmy-winning, Grammy-nominated songwriter Greg Barnhill (“Walkaway Joe,” “House of Love”), discovered their shared passion for lifting people’s spirits through music. Since then they have co-written over one hundred songs and joined forces on five studio albums.

Music is my oldest friend, the one I could always count on to soothe my spirit and deliver guidance, especially during the hard times…

As a kid, I remember listening intently to the lyrics of great singer-songwriters like Cat Stevens, Neil Young, Jim Croce and Harry Chapin, and to bands like The Rolling Stones, The Who, The Doors and The Beatles…feeling peace and calm.

As a young man trying to find my way in the world, I gravitated towards personal-growth books, programs and seminars to help answer the question: “Why am I here?” – As I believe we are all here to fulfill a higher purpose.

Over the years, this curiosity led me to absorb a plethora of personal growth content, attend a variety of seminars and workshops, and eventually pursue an advanced degree in Counseling Psychology.

In 2007 I started an online marketing agency for personal and professional growth experts. Through this experience I became aware of the disturbing fact that, much like home exercise equipment that that’s purchased with the best of intentions but never used, the vast majority of personal growth books and programs sold, are never opened.

Five years later, after decades of struggle, I had finally achieved the financial success I thought would bring happiness, and yet, in what seemed like a huge cosmic joke at the time, the monetary achievement felt hollow…and in that emptiness a nagging voice kept telling me to give back…that the lessons I had learned could benefit others tremendously.

Then a friend told me about “The Tombstone Exercise” that changed my life forever. I will share it with you now. She asked me to visualize what I wanted to be written on my tombstone. I closed my eyes and connected with my passion for music and how much it had literally saved me over the years…

Then my passion for music collided with my belief in personal empowerment and my frustration with all the ‘unopened’ personal growth content out there, and the vision for Music for Positive Change was born – to write, record and perform songs that deliver the same uplifting, empowering mantras and messages found in all those books and programs, in a fun, easy way that anyone can enjoy, anytime.

Although my online marketing agency is called Guru Authority, I am definitely not a “Guru”, (I actually somewhat detest the word), as I believe everyone already has the resources within to step into their greatness. You don’t need anyone else to tell you that – but sometimes having tools to help you clear away the clutter, connect with spirit and what’s really important can be helpful. If my music helps you do that, I am sincerely honored.

Best wishes,

Favorite quotes:
“We have not even to risk the adventure alone
for the heroes of all time have gone before us.
The labyrinth is thoroughly known
we have only to follow the thread of the hero path.
And where we had thought to find an abomination
we shall find a God.
And where we had thought to slay another
we shall slay ourselves.
Where we had thought to travel outwards
we shall come to the center of our own existence.
And where we had thought to be alone
we shall be with all the world.”
